The A4988 is a microstepping driver for controlling bipolar stepper motors which has built-in translator for easy operation. This means that we can control the stepper motor with just 2 pins from our controller, or one for controlling the rotation direction and the other for controlling the steps. A4988 is what RAMPS 1.4 suggests and since your motor looks similar, I'd go with what your shield documentation recommends. I suspect that the advice you were given is because the driver can't supply the maximum rated current for your motor.
